January 10: "Voice of the Cello"
Experience the rich voice of the cello as we explore the rise of this diverse instrument and its solo repertoire during the early Eighteenth century. More than a bass instrument in ensembles, the cello soon blossomed into a prominent solo instrument, with a sonority and tone that reminds us of our human voice.

Voice of the Cello features the music of Italian and French composers who exploited the cello's expressive nature and paired it with the virtuosity of French viol players in their sonatas. With two or three bass instruments playing together, this music creates a sonority that is not often heard in concert music.

Cellists Michael Lawson and John Lutterman are joined by viol player David Miller to perform Sonatas of Vivaldi, Cervetto, Berteau, and Barriere.
