ST. PAUL'S ANNUAL MUSIC COMPOSITION COMPETITION

Winners will have their compositions performed by
Vox Musica
and
the Empyrean Ensemble

Deadline: Entry must be postmarked by January 4, 2008.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Sacramento, California is pleased to announce the launch of the St. Paul’s Annual Music Composition Competition.  Two $500 prizes will be awarded: one for a piece composed for women’s voices and one composed for instrumental chamber ensemble.  Each piece will be performed in their entirety at the closing concert of the Jazz and Progressive Music Series at St. Paul’s on Friday, June 6, 2008.  The winning women’s vocal composition will be considered for a publishing opportunity.  A composer can receive only one prize.  The jury for this competition will consist of distinguished musicians (composers, performers, and music directors) from the Sacramento area.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church dates back to the Gold Rush in California and is the first organized parish in Sacramento. Today, St. Paul’s houses a vital and growing music series, including Classical, Choral, and Jazz and Experimental music.  An interesting bit of music history is that the Grateful Dead performed here before they were famous!  The St. Paul’s Annual Music Composition Competition strives to enlarge our community by bringing together composers from across the nation and abroad with local musicians and music lovers.

THE ENSEMBLES

St. Paul’s is pleased to have Vox Musica, directed by Daniel Paulson, and the Empyrean Ensemble, co-directed by Laurie A. San Martin and Kurt Rohde, to present the winning compositions.

Founded, directed and comprised of young regional musicians, the eight members of Vox Musica include trained choral singers, graduates of music programs at fine colleges and universities, and professional musicians and teachers from throughout the Sacramento area.  Their chamber ensemble size coupled with the many colours and textures of the women's voice provides the listener an opportunity to experience a type of choral singing rarely heard in our community.
